Obituary

Anna Mae (Amy) Yates Ashby, 91, peacefully ended her earthly life on Saturday, June 17, 2017 after a long illness. She was one of the strongest, sweetest individuals you could meet.

Anna Mae (Amy) Yates Ashby, 91, peacefully ended her earthly life on Saturday, June 17, 2017 after a long illness. She was one of the strongest, sweetest individuals you could meet.
Anna Mae was born in Houston on April 14, 1926 to Otis and Corene Yates. She graduated from Milby High School in 1942, at which time she attended Massey Business College. She then began working "downtown" at a tugboat line office. It was there that she continually signed her work with the initials A.M.Y. and thus adopted the name all but her family knew her by.
Soon after, she met a gangly Staff Sargent in the Army, William Ashby. She married her "Willie" in November of 1948 and they were devoted to each other for 61 years until his death in 2009. They began their married live on Pecan Dr. in South Houston and in May of 1954 moved to the home she occupied until recently.
Anna Mae had a close bond with her immediate and extended family. She had the unique experience of growing up within blocks of her aunts, uncles, and cousins. She told frequent stories of her "country cousins" and the grand times she had in Alief and Addicks growing up.
Closest of all were the bonds with her 3 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. All have special memories with their Granny, including trips, baking cookies, and making Christmas divinity.
Anna Mae worked as a tireless volunteer at her children's schools until she began working fulltime at Dobie High School in 1968. She was secretary to three principals (Sory, Braden, and Speers), retiring in the mid 90s. She and Willie enjoyed traveling, dancing, shopping, and just being together. They were members of a group of couples who played cards together monthly for over 50 years. She was also an accomplished piano player, always enjoying music of all kinds.
Anna Mae was preceded in death by her parents, husband Willie, brother Pete, and son Donald. She is survived by her son Bill (Jamie), daughter Amy Ashby-Pike, granddaughters Carrie Ashby, Stephanie Pape (Brandon), and Cheyenne Pike, and great grandchildren Taylor, Haley, and Ryan.
Services will be under the care of Forest Park Lawndale. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 20th from 6-8 pm. Services will be Wednesday, June 21st at 10:00 am in the Chapel of the Angels, with Interment immediately following.
